Being protected…Being safe….Having someone to turn to…
These are not experiences that Michael* knew well.
Michael is a 14 year old boy who lives with his aunt and uncle. When
he was 8, Michael’s mother died suddenly. Michael and his younger
sister were bewildered and terribly depressed. Their father, who had used
street drugs before his children were born, was so distraught that he
turned to drugs again to escape. Within a couple of months, he was completely
preoccupied with drugs and had stopped parenting his children.
No one was getting Michael out of bed in the morning in the way his mother
had. No one was making him breakfast. No one was reviewing his homework.
No one was making sure he was in school.
When Michael was 9, one of his teachers noticed that this usually energetic
and happy little boy had become sullen, quiet and angry. The teacher knew
Michael’s mother had died, so she arranged for him to see a school
social worker, but she was unaware of his father’s drug use. The
teachers saw Michael begin to misbehave and break rules. She saw him hitting
other students. He became absent more and more. No one could account for
Michael’s whereabouts.
The teacher called Child Protective Services, and the State decided that
Michael and his sister would be better living with his aunt and uncle.
Michael’s aunt brought him to Samaritan, where children, adults
and their families can get the help they need when life’s problems
become overwhelming.
Every day the Center helps children like Michael. And every day, people
like Michael fall through the cracks. Without insurance to pay for his
sessions, Michael was able to receive counseling through the Client Assistance
Fund, which subsidizes uninsured and insured clients with minimal mental
health benefits..
Your tax deductible investment will make a lasting difference in the
lives of children like Michael…their families and the quality of
life throughout our community. Without your generous support of the Client
Assistance Fund, we would not be able to help the Michaels of the world.

* Michael’s name is fictitious, but his story is authentic in nature
and similar to clients who receive “help and hope” every day
at the Samaritan Counseling Center of West Texas.
